Navigate your Destination on Trail!

Updated: Mar 1, 2023

There are several types of navigation methods that hikers can use on the trail, including:

  1. Maps: One of the most important tools for navigation on the Appalachian Trail is a good map. The official Appalachian Trail Conservancy produces a set of detailed maps that cover the entire trail, which can be purchased online or at various retailers.

  2. Compass: A compass is another important tool for navigation on the Appalachian Trail, especially when visibility is low. Hikers can use a compass in conjunction with a map to determine their direction of travel.

  3. Trail Markers: The Appalachian Trail is marked with a system of white blazes (rectangular paint marks) on trees and rocks along the trail. Hikers can follow these blazes to stay on the trail.

  4. GPS: Some hikers may choose to use a GPS device to help them navigate the trail. This can be especially useful in areas where the trail is poorly marked or when visibility is low.

  5. Guidebooks: There are several guidebooks available that provide detailed information on the Appalachian Trail, including trail descriptions, maps, and points of interest. These can be a useful resource for hikers who want to plan their trip in advance.
